MY MA & PA

I know it's been a few weeks since I've written - my apologies, there has been a lot going on, as most of you know. Anyway - I have lots of entries that I've been meaning to write, so I will just start with them...

It was so lovely having Mum and Dad stay with me in London a couple of months ago. It's a very different relationship that you have with your parents when you live in another country. You talk on the phone once a week and email but actually spending time face to face is a bonus. This year I've had about 3 months with them, 2 months down under, a few weeks with Lib & Ian but then 4 days on my own turf, in my house, in well, let's just say, not the safest part of London...and it was anything but boring....

Let me just set it up for you - Brixton is a very "multicultural" area of London - known most famously for the Race Riots back in the 80's. You hear stories of drugs and mugging, but in the year I've lived here, I've never seen much evidence of that, until my parents arrived that is !! All these strange things keep happening to me whilst I was with them that have never happened to me before.

Travelling around London when you're not too good on your legs isn't particularly easy. To save on stairs I thought we’d take the bus – in principle – that’s a good idea – in practise? Not so good. We approach the bus stop only to be surrounded by a gang of kids straight out of a scene from Boys N The Hood, seriously - not only were they smoking pot, but one of them was actually in a wheelchair !! Mum and Dad were oblvious until I pointed out what that "smell" was and kept repeating "don't make any eye contact".

In Australia it might be common for people to talk on public transport – in London – it’s the complete opposite – people just don’t. The next day on the bus we encountered two women screaming at each other something alog the lines of “your mother” and "no your mother" sort of banter. For the locals – the corners of their mouth turned up into a smirk – for Ma & Pa? absolute terror and fair enough - I guess she doesn’t often travel on public transport.

They say that your parents aren’t really being "proper" parents if they aren’t embarrassing you in public places. In Australia it’s common for a checkout chick to ask to check any other shopping bags u may have with you – in England – it’s not, but that doesn’t stop my mum from showing them the contents of every bag she has on her person every time. The best response Mum had from the helpless checkout chick the contents of her shopping bag was a very polite "that’s a nice top”.

I left them home one alone one night – after a 10 minute demonstration on how to lock the door, how to answer the phone, and most importantly how to use the remote control for the cable I left them to it, thinking they'd be asleep soon anyway. The next morning I asked if they enjoyed their variety of 200 channels they had available.

They both looked at me sheepishly – “oh we just watched the one channel”. "why?" I asked. "We couldn’t work out the remote control" they replied "but luckily it was on the biography channel so now we know alot about Jude Law and x an y". It turned out the battery was dead !!

It's sad not to have them around now. Il miss knowing where all the good public toilets are in London; I miss their water bottle addiction, their humour, their wisdom, their advice - I guess I just miss them...

IAN’S TRAIN

This is Ian's train...
When my sister first started dating Ian many many years ago - he told her he had a train, we thought he meant a model train....but he didn't. He meant a proper train, a big train, a train that people can sit on...he got rid of that train, but last year he finally purchased another - and HERE IT IS !!
It has a very colourful history this train - it was used in the war and everything. For more info about Ian's train: http://hughesi.460.users.btopenworld.com/frontpage.html

Besides liking trains - Ian also likes steam (probably because they help make the trains go) so recently we went to a "Gathering of Steam Engines" - it was actually quite exciting....they even had old steam rides...
But it was this very very special train was my favourite....if you look closely you'll see why....

My Posh Flatmate George...

Saw these photos of my flatmate George (who some of you met last year down under when we worked on the Born To Kill series) and just HAD to blog them because they made me laugh so much......I really didn't think English men ever actually wore Top Hat and Tails!!!
The special occassion was of course Ascot, he and his lovely girlfriend Sophie were in the Royal Enclosure so had to dress up !! It's slightly far removed from my youth spent at the Eagle Farm races with our $10 jugs of rum and coke...

BRISVEGAS CULTURE

I just came across this bit of writing that I had yet to blog so here goes....

I don't want you poms thinking all we do is sunbathe and update our tans so...when I was down under I also did some very exciting and some very "cultural" things...

* I went to a “Business Chicks” breakfast with my friend Sueanne where David Roberts, the author of Shantaram was speaking. It was a really interesting day and I spent most of it being recognise as my "fathers daughter" which was quite sweet. I bought his book and got to speak to him afterwards... * I went to a premiere of the Musical “Dusty” with my friend Marian who’s cousin is the executive producer of it. I’d hightly recommend it to anyone who will be in Brisbane from August onwards – it was brilliant. I didn’t realise how many Dusty Springfield songs I knew ! Hopefully it will get to the UK soon because I have been promised front row seats !!! And I have a very cool bag which I still carry all over London as promotion !!

* I attended a reading of my friends Katy & Aletha’s new musical which I’m hoping will be in production and ready for me to attend the opening night of in April next year.

* I went to a poerty/open mic night with my friends Kim & Alicia – which was fun...

* I saw Judith Lucy perform at the Powerhouse with my mate Angela – I’ve been a big fan of Judity for the last 15 years since I first saw her perform the Soap Opera poem on the Big Gig.

So there is a lot of cool cultural stuff happening in Vegas, you just have to go out there and find it...

A good local lager...

Available on Tap...

Libby & Ian's Garden..

There are a few new additions to Lib & Ian's garden, courtesy of the folks and I...I bought the Wallace & Grommit additions....

And Ma & Pa proudly display the new hedgehog...

We also went to a really cool arts and crafts festival called a POT FEST....here are some ceramic tile things we saw....

It got us in the creative spirit so here are some vases that I hand painted...

Some Silly Things to Think About

If a cat always lands on its feet and buttered bread always lands butter side down, what would happen if you tied buttered bread on top of a cat?

If you take a shower, where do you put it?

Shouldn't there be a shorter word for "monosyllabic"?

Why does an alarm clock 'go off' when it begins ringing?

Would a fly without wings be called a walk?

Do cows have calf muscles?

Why is it so hard to remember how to spell 'mnemonic'?

Why does your nose run and your feet smell?

Why isn't phonetic spelled the way it sounds?

CAMPING in style...

I bought a tent a few weeks ago when I was staying with Lib & Ian. It was so much fun setting it all up in their backyard (with Mum & Dad watching on, pointing out which pegs I still had to bang in & reminscing about camping stories from childhood like when Dad forgot the poles & had to drive all the way home to get them !!) that I decided to go camping again.

Guess where I went ? Ten points to the lucky winner....

Yes indeedy it was STONEHENGE!! (no Duncan, we did not camp in the centre of the stones!). It was my mate Lou's birthday so off we set for a weekend of sunshine, fresh air and camping...that's not quite what we got, but we had a great time anyway...

My friend Abi kindly offered to drive me so off we set - 2 o'clock in the afternoon, map and directions in tow.....a journey that should have taken us about 2 hours took us about 6 !! And about an hour of that time was spent driving up and down country lanes (oddly one of the nearby towns was aptly called "Nowhere"). Abi finally lost it as we literally ended up in a dead end...

We arrived eventually and set about setting up camp....my friends know how to camp in style....

The next day we went to visit Stonehenge itself. We grabbed the walkie talkie things and excitedly tuned in....It was all very lovely & informative until we felt a few drops of rain fall upon us. Not too bothered, we continued our walking tour.....the rain drops got heavier and heavier and heavier.....most people ran away but a few of us, desperate to hear the end of the Stonehenge mystery......remained.

And we got very very very very wet. So wet in fact that you could say we got saturated. **

Off we ran to the nearest pub to dry off. We were quite exhausted by then so settled in for an afternoon of darts, cards, scrabble......oh & a few pints to quench our thirst....It was a lovely weekend overall and I hope Lou had a very lovely birthday !!

HAPPY BIRTHDAY LOU !!

**there are no photos to demonstate this because:

a) i was desperately hiding my camera so it wouldn't get wet also

b) because we weren't looking our best !

Sue the Trend Setter

I'm not often known as a "trend setter" but for some reason, I am !!

It's these little bits of funny looking plastic that have made me "trendy" - they are called Crocs and they are shoes, and they are the "latest" trend on Bondi Beach (according to my friend Jenny who sold them to me!!) - I just liked them because they are comfortable, but now they are all over London and everyone is wearing them !! Cool.

The BIG Apple, Stanthorpe

It's BIG.
